Compression- only Life Support/ COLS
About Course
The Compression-Only Life Support (COLS) course is designed to train laypersons in providing effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) outside the hospital setting. The course focuses on a simple, stepwise algorithm that emphasizes early recognition of cardiac arrest, immediate activation of emergency services, continuous chest compressions, and early transfer to a medical facility
COLS primarily promotes chest compression-only CPR, eliminating the need for mouth-to-mouth ventilation, making it easier, more practical, and culturally acceptable for bystanders. The course highlights the importance of uninterrupted high-quality chest compressions at the recommended rate and depth to improve survival outcomes
This program is especially relevant in the Indian context, where access to emergency medical services may be limited. By empowering laypersons with essential life-saving skills, the COLS course aims to increase early intervention and improve survival rates in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest situations.
